Social Engineering. What is it?
The term social engineering has come to describe the act of winning the trust of individuals such as company employees to gain information which will be used to access computer systems. Typical social engineering techniques include using the telephone and posing as the employee of companies such as financial institutions or utilities, 'tailgating' employees into a corporate office through secure doors. Social Engineering can also be used in email phishing situations where an email is sent to someone purporting to be from say a financial institution aksing that they login to a web site which is in fact not the real web site and they steal your login information.
