Packet Sniffing. What is it?

Packet sniffing refers to the collection and analysis of data packets (including contents) as they transit the network. For example if you are in a public wifi hotspot and transmit data over the internet, its possible for an individual to sniff the packets of data as they cross the network. This means that if you connect to your email for example and your data packets are intercepted, then the person intercepting the data can view your username and password. Popular packet sniffing prorammes include: Sniphere, PlasticSniffer and IP Sniffer.
